Physical Education (PE)
At Sparrow Farm Primary School, we aim to inspire all children to develop a love of physical activity and sport. Through good physical education, whole school values and a whole child approach, we aim to nurture confident, resilient children who will strive for their personal best. We want to aid our children in obtaining the values and skills to celebrate and respect the success of others, as well as modestly celebrating their own successes.
Our objectives in the teaching of PE align with the National Curriculum in that we aim to ensure all pupils:
- Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
- Are physically active for sustained periods of time
- Engage in competitive sports and activities
- Lead healthy, active lives
We achieve this through the use of the Get Set 4 PE platform, which aligns with our core values, our whole child approach and the objectives laid out in the National Curriculum. The Get Set 4 PE scheme is used as a fundamental guide and tool for our PE curriculum and has been designed so that clear progression is built into the scheme. This ensures our children are increasingly challenged as they move up through the school and are able to build upon skills previously learnt whilst also focussing on the whole child through social, emotions and thinking skills objectives within each lesson.
Physical Education goes beyond just PE lessons and at Sparrow Farm we are fortunate to have a wide range of facilities and resources to support us further in engaging children in any form of physical activity. This includes a MUGA, large playing field, Outdoor Fitness Gym equipment, adventure trail, forest area, climbing wall. Year 6 children also act as Play Leaders, setting up and managing active zones with engaging equipment and activities during lunchtimes, including activities such as table tennis, badminton and dancing.
We aim to ensure that our delivery of physical education allows all children to engage fully in PE, to develop children's basic physical competencies, build confidence in their ability and have the skills, knowledge and mind-set to leave primary school with the foundations for a lifelong love of sport, physical activity and healthy lifestyles at secondary school and beyond.
