Dear Parents and Carers,

Reception at Sparrow Farm Primary School is engaging, exciting and encourages curiosity in all. We provide our children with a range of real life experiences that help them to create their own ‘child led’ learning.

As well as a free flow setting inside, our vast grounds allow us to take our learning outside of the classroom, giving our children space to explore and build the core skills of physical, emotional and social development.

At Sparrow Farm Primary School, we pride ourselves on our commitment to ensuring that children develop emotionally as well as academically.

We understand that the foundations for positive attachments and relationship develop within the early years of a child’s life. We therefore ensure that our children have the skills and understanding during their time in Reception which help them grow as an individual; building resilience, self-esteem and empathy.

This year

Over the year we will be looking at a range of exciting themes:

  • This is me!
  • Festivities!
  • Growing!
  • Minibeasts!
  • Adventures!
  • Around the World!

In these topics, we will be providing our children with real world experiences which link to the 7 key areas of learning within the EYFS: literacy, mathematics, understanding the world, expressive art and design, physical development and personal, social and emotional development and communication and language. These experiences will come through facilitating interactions with adults, such as phonics teaching, however will primarily be through child led activities within our free-flow classrooms and outside environment. We create interactive and enabling areas which change regularly to engage children and which develop as children grow in understanding and develop their own interests.

We also provide our children with a range of fantastic additional enrichment opportunities both on and off site. They will explore our forested areas, building dens and creating artwork from natural resources. Our children will learn the practical skills to grow their own fruit and vegetables within our allotment area as well as venturing off site on a range of exciting trips throughout the year. Not only that but we hope to have some interesting and fascinating visitors come to our school to share their skills with our children.

Please see our Long Term Plan for the year and our Medium Term Plan  which will give you some more information on the specific skills the children will be covering within the term.

We are looking forward to an exciting year ahead and cannot wait to see you all soon.

Best Wishes,

Mr Tomlinson & Miss Patrick
