Fledglings

Dear Fledglings families

A warm welcome to all our new families, and a heartfelt welcome back to those returning to Sparrow Farm to continue their learning journey!

In Fledglings, our priority is to help children settle in so that they feel safe and secure as they begin exploring all areas of learning. At Sparrow Farm, we place great value on children’s happiness and emotional wellbeing. We promote a culture rooted in kindness, friendship, and thoughtfulness.

Throughout the term, we will support children in demonstrating our core values by encouraging them to build relationships and be Ambitious, Bold, and Curious.

To help the children become familiar with our daily routines, we will use visual aids and songs. We kindly ask all parents to ensure their child arrives on time for their session so we can support them as they settle in.

Please remember to bring:

  • A clearly labelled water bottle
  • Spare clothes, also clearly labelled

We strongly encourage families to provide several changes of spare clothing as children will have many opportunities for hands-on exploration, including sensory play, outdoor learning, and water play. These experiences are an important part of how young children learn, but they can sometimes get messy or wet. Having spare clothes ensures your child can remain comfortable and confident throughout the day.

Our Learning Approach:

We develop children’s learning through play-based and child-led experiences, guided by our core texts and the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Curriculum.

We believe children are natural explorers and learn best when they follow their own interests, ask questions, and engage in curiosity driven play. By encouraging them to investigate, experiment, and problem solve, we nurture both their independence and their creativity.

Through sensory play, such as exploring textures, sounds, colours, water, and natural materials, children develop important skills including communication, social interaction, fine and gross motor control, and early scientific thinking. These experiences not only support their learning across the curriculum but also strengthen their emotional wellbeing by allowing them to express themselves freely.

The Prime Areas of Learning:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development

The Specific Areas of Learning:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Every child deserves the best possible start in life and the support that enables them to fulfil their potential. Children develop quickly in the early years, and a child’s experiences between birth and age five have a major impact on their future life chances.
